Birdsey, Cindi

Referee
There were no girls' sports teams at Maloney High School when Cindi Birdsey, a 1963 graduate, attended. However, that most certainly did not stop her from a lifelong love of athletics! As a player, she enjoyed a successful basketball career at Southern Connecticut State College, and rose to play softball at the ASA level. As a coach, she led both the soccer and softball programs at Maloney.

In 1979, Athletic Director, Joann Galati, hired Tony Floyd to replace her as the girls' basketball coach at Bristol Eastern High School. Eastern’s girls’ basketball program was founded and brought to prominence by Galati. It's very clear, all these years later, that she couldn't have found anyone more dedicated to the team than Floyd.

Thaxton, Barbara

Although her former players include members of the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame, Olympians and Division I NCAA tournament champions, Barbara Thaxton began her coaching career right here in Connecticut, as the first girls' basketball coach at Wilbur Cross High School, in New Haven (1974-82).

Grossarth, Jessica

On March 1, 1998, the Fairfield University women's basketball team defeated Loyola (Md.) 59-53 at Pepsi Arena in Albany, N.Y., to win the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference tournament championship. That made certain that Jessica Grossarth would end her career with the Stags in the NCAA Division I tournament, a fitting final act for the future Fairfield Athletics Hall of Famer.

Dixon, William

It would take a long memory to recall a time the fabric of the City of New Haven has not been tied to William L. Dixon.
The current Deputy Director of the New Haven Parks & Recreation Department, Bill has also served as a city firefighter, directed New Haven's efforts in coordinating the 1995 Special Olympics World Games.

Ruthko, Judy
2017
Referee
Judy Ruthko will always remember the first state championship girls' basketball game she ever officiated in 2000. As it turned out, however, it was the first of many for Judy, now a longtime referee with the International Association of Approved Basketball Officials (IAABO) Board 10 out of New Haven.
