Hunt, Jean

Honorary

During her athletic career, Jean Hunt coached basketball, softball, field hockey, volleyball, soccer, track, and badminton. Hunt’s overall sports record was an amazing 502 wins, 139 losses, and 44 ties. Hunt’s teams won 11 state championships, eight conference championships, and enjoyed 20 undefeated seasons in six sports.

Claxton, Tracy

High School Player

Tracy Claxton led two teams to State and National championships. She led Wilbur Cross High School to three consecutive Class L state titles and in 1985, led Old Dominion University to the NCAA Division I Championship.

Spencer, Helen

Referee

Helen Spencer’s career as a basketball official spanned 22 years - from 1949 to 1971. Spencer served on Boards of Officials in Pennsylvania, New York, California, and Connecticut. She founded the Southwest Connecticut Board of Women Officials of which she is an Honorary Life Member.

Benevento, Mary

Honorary

Mary Benevento was a high school coach, a college coach, a basketball official, and an athletic director. Benevento held the distinction of being the first female Athletic Director named at a public high school in New England.

O’Connor, Mary Anne
1988
College Player

Mary Anne O’Connor’s outstanding playing career at SCSC gained her national as well as in-ternational recognition. In 1973 and 1974, O’Connor’s Southern Connecticut team was ranked third in the nation. In 1973 and 1975, they captured the Northeast Regional Championship.

O’Neal, Louise

College Coach

Louise O’Neal is one of a group of coaching pioneers who paved the way for women’s college basketball as we know it today. From 1962-1976, O’Neal served as head women’s basketball coach at Southern Connecticut State College. She revolutionized the women’s program at Southern, elevating it from a club sport in the 1960’s to a varsity sport in the ‘70’s. She led her teams to an impressive 144-37 record and eight straight appearances in the National Women’s Collegiate Championships.

Nicolari, Bernice
1988
High School Coach

Bernice Nicolari developed the women's sports' program at Shelton High School, where she coached basketball for 17 years - - from 1962 to 1979. Her teams compiled a 214-53 win/loss record, won 7 consecutive Housatonic League titles, won the 1976 CIAC Class Double L Championship, posted three undefeated seasons, enjoyed winning steaks of 27 and 30 games, and placed players on the All-State, All-Housatonic League, and All-Valley first, second, and honorable mention teams.
