1991
Dora Metrelis was a pioneer in the development and promotion of girls’ and women’s sports in Connecticut. Her career as a basketball official and instructor began in 1955, before the passage of Title IX. She refereed Connecticut high school tournament games, up to the quarterfinals rounds. Metrelis worked with the Central Connecticut Board of Officials; the Suffolk County, N.Y., and Connecticut State Basketball Boards of Officials.
Metrelis worked tirelessly to recruit and train new officials – male and female -- to officiate high school, college and tournament level games. She taught officiating classes at Southern Connecticut State University and was involved in rating and training officials. Many of the most highly regarded officials in the state learned their lessons in her classes.
