Liz McGovern played basketball at Bridgeport Central for Coach Barbara John in the 1970’s. The forward/center helped her team to the second round of the Connecticut State Tournament two years in a row (1973-74, 74-75). McGovern recorded 650 points while averaging 25 points, 3.5 assists, 2 steals, and a dominating 18.2 rebounds per game during her high school career.

In 1974, McGovern was named to the All-MBIAC volleyball and basketball teams and in 1975, garnered conference honors in volleyball, basketball, and softball—the first female Bridgeport Central multi-sport All-MBIAC athlete. She was also a Second Team Class L All-State selection in 1975.

McGovern’s work ethic and determination later helped Manhattanville College win the Hudson Valley championship in 1976. That year she was also one of fifteen finalists in the Northeast Regional Olympic Trials.

McGovern played her last two years for Kathy Mossolino at Fordham University. McGovern held single game records of 8 steals and 17 assists, and scored 918 career points at Fordham. She was named to the 1978 State-All Tournament team and was inducted into the Fordham Hall of Fame in 1992.
