An All-American on Thomaston High School's 1994 Class S State Championship Team, Amy Matthews shone at point guard and was rewarded with All-State and All-League Honors. She played AAU basketball for many years and was point guard for the AAU Junior Olympic Basketball Team.
At Western Connecticut State University, where she played for Coach Jody Rajcula from 1994 to 1998, Amy led the Colonials to two NCAA and two ECAC Tournaments. A Kodak All-District selection, Amy posted a Career Scoring Total of 1,565 points to place second on Western Connecticut State University's All-Time Scoring List.
In four seasons of play, Amy still ranks third in three WCSU categories: field goals (558), free throws (303), and three-pointers (146). In '97-'98 alone, McKenna scored a season high 456 points.
In 1996-'97, Matthews was named to the NCAA's Sweet 16 Team. She was a three-time Little East Conference 1st Team All-Star selection. In six Offensive categories, Amy graduated among the Top Ten WCSU women college basketball players. In 2011, Amy was named to the Little East Conference 25th Anniversary Team.
