Joann Galati participated in field hockey, basketball and softball at New Britain High School and Southern Connecticut State University. After graduation, she began teaching in Bristol, where in 1967, she began the first interscholastic teams for girls in basketball and softball.
In 1970 she initiated, formed, and received CIAC approval for an all-girls sports team confer-ence, the Central Connecticut Interscholastic Conference for girls’ teams. At that time, girls were not included with the boys in the Central Connecticut Interscholastic League. The League existed until both boys and girls teams entered the Colonial Conference. In 1984, Galati represented the Colonial Conference schools and girls’ teams in the development of policies and procedures for the 24-school Central Connecticut Conference.
Galati served on the CIAC girls basketball committee, was a coaches’ representative and ath-letic director. She worked summer basketball camps, conducted clinics, provided parent programs on girls’ sports, and held a state DGWS official’s rating. Galati also served as chairwoman of the Central Connecticut Board of Officials.
