Nicholas Chaconis has been Portland High School's Girls' Basketball Coach since 1974. Portland's first ever girls' head coach, Nick has compiled a record of 538 wins against 315 losses in his 38 years at the helm.

Chaconis' Portland teams have chalked up eight League Championship Titles, ten CIAC Tournament semi-final appearances, two CIAC Tournament final appearances and the 2011 Class S State Championship Title.

In 1985, Nick was named CIAC Girls' Basketball Coach of the Year. In both 2001 and 2005, Chaconis was a Finalist for the National Girls' Basketball Coach of the Year. In 2004, he received the CIAC Basketball Merit Award; was inducted into the Portland High School Hall of Fame in 2005, and in 2012, Chaconis received the Central Connecticut District Board's Sportsman¬ship Award.

In his 38 year coaching career, Nick Chaconis has seen eleven of his players win All-State Honors. Thirteen of Chaconis' players have reached the 1,000 point scoring mark. His Portland teams recorded 32 consecutive League wins from 1976 to 1979, remained undefeated during the '78-'79 season, and qualified for CIAC State Tournament play 33 out of his 38 years as coach. Nick has three times been selected coach for the Connecticut High School Coaches' Association All-Star Festival.

Nick Chaconis currently serves as Special Education teacher for the Portland School District.
