Patty Costa | High School Player | Inducted 2013

Patty Costa began playing “biddy” basketball in 4th grade and began a lifelong love of the game. Her 8th grade team won the New England Championship with a 37-3 record. Patty made the Andrew Warde High School varsity basketball team as a freshman and eventually re-wrote the school’s girls’ basketball record book.

Patty Costa holds Andrew Warde’s career scoring record with 1,595 points – without benefit of the 3-point shot. Costa's single game high of 47 points was scored against Guilford in December of 1984; her single game high of 13 assists was recorded against Stamford in 1985.

Senior year saw Costa averaging 28.8 points per game. From 1981 to 1985, Costa twice scored 40 or more points, 18 times scored 30 or more points, and 44 times scored 20 or more points. In 62 of her final 63 games, Costa scored in double figures.

Co-Captain and Most Valuable Player her senior year, Patty Costa was named to the New Haven Register's Class LL All-State 1st Team in 1983-'84 and '84-'85, the Hartford Courant's All-State Class LL 1st Team in '83-'84 and '84-'85, the New York Daily News All-Star 1st Team in '83-'84 and '84-'85, the Converse All-American High School Honorable Mention Team in '84-'85, Honorable Mention Carnation Prep All-American Girls' Athlete in '84-'85, the FCIAC All-Tournament Team in '84-'85, the All-FCIAC Team in '83-'84 and '84-'85, Most Valuable Player of the FCIAC Tournament in '83-'84, Connecticut's Leading Scorer with 576 points (a 29.3 ppg. average) in '84-'85, Connecticut's Highest Career Scorer with 1,595 points in '84-'85, and Connecticut Junior Olympic Team Leading Scorer in 1984-'85.

Patty Costa attended and played at both Fairfield University and the University of Bridgeport, graduating Summa Cum Laude from the University of Bridgeport. During her freshman year at Fairfield, Patty was selected to the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Div. 1 Women’s Basketball All Rookie First Team. She tallied 1099 total career points in college and at UB, led the NECC Conference in field goal percentage (50.5%), 3-point field goal percentage (50%), and was the third leading scorer (18.5 ppg).

Patty Costa currently serves as Head Guidance Counselor at Bunnell High School in Stratford.
