1992 Inductee Biographies

Gail Shipp - High School Coach
During her 22-year coaching career at Trumbull High School, her teams enjoyed two -undefeated seasons, won ten league division titles, were F.C.I.A.C. League champions in 1973 and'74, won the class L. State Championship Title in 1974, and  posted 251 career wins against 128 losses. Ms. Shipp was chosen to coach two senior all-star teams and in 1987 managed and coached the west team at the '87 Olympic  Sports Festival held al Chapel Hill, N.C. That team won the gold medal at this event. h 1981 Ms. Shipp was named Connecticut High School Coach of the Year, and in 1982 and 1989, she was named Region One Coach of the Year. In addition to basketball, Ms. Shipp coached field hockey and track and field for 13 years at Trumbull High, and since 1982, she has been Trumbull High's Girl's Softball Coach. A teacher at Trumbull High, she serves as the school's Assistant Athletic Director.

Bonnie Maskery    Referee Inductee
Bonnie boasts a career as an official for Women's Basketball spanning 26 years, from 1961 to 1987. During this time, Mrs. Maskery worked for the Connecticut, New Hampshire and New York Boards of Girls' Basketball Officials, attaining a national ranking in the State of Connecticut. Mrs. Maskery has officiated C. I A.C. State Tournament Games, N.A.I.A.A. Division Three Games and the New England Association of Deaf Schools Championship games. Forl7years,she has served as a member of the C.IA.C. Girls' Basketball Committee. She also served on officiating and training committees for the State Board of officials, and as chairperson, State Secretary and State Treasurer for the State Board of Officials. A Bristol resident, she is a counselor and registered hypnotherapist.


Celeste Beattie   Honorary Inductee
As a physical education teacher at Shelton High School, Celeste Beattie organized and participated in "play days," traveling throughout Connecticut so that her students could play competitively with teams from other schools. She also organized and conducted basketball clinics for the Shelton Recreation Department, trained officials at clinics and at the Bridgeport YWCA, and served as the girls' sports advocate for 16 years as member of the Board of Directors of the Shelton Recreation Department. From 1969 to 1979 Ms. Beattie served as assistant coach trainer and manager of the Shelton High School Girls' Basketball Team during which time the team won eight Housatonic League Titles and the 1976 CIAC Class Double L State Championship.

Celeste Beattie retired in 1992 after a 36 year teaching career at SHS, having served as physical education instructor, biology teacher, assistant women's basketball coach, and cheerleading advisor.  Still active on local environmental committees, Beattie travels extensively with her husband, three children and seven grandchildren.

Cathy Bochain - College Player Inductee
Cathy proved that a scholar/athlete can be successful in following a rigorous academic program and in excelling athletically. Graduating cum laude from the University of Connecticut School of Pharmacy in 1985, Ms. Bochain became UConn's all-time leading scorer, with 1,534 points, and registered the most steals -- a total of 240 -- and the most steals in a single game -- 10. During that time her team ranked number one in New England in Division One Play in l981, and was the region's representative to the AIAW. Tournament. During the 1979-80 season, Ms. Bochain was selected to the AU-Connecticut, Rhode Island and Massachusetts Team and was the recipient of the 1983 UConn Club Award for the Outstanding Female Athlete. Cathy Bochain is a registered pharmacist.

Wendi Kemp   High School Player Inductee
Wendi's basketball career at Cheshire High School showcased her talent on the court, making her one of two high school
players inducted this year. For three consecutive seasons, Ms. Kemp was named Cheshire's most valuable player. In 1981 and 82 Ms. Kemp was selected for the All-Housatonic League Team and for the Tap-Off Club's All-County Team. She was also named the Tap-Off Club's Scholar Athlete. During the 1981-82 season, Wendi Kemp was named to the Converse All-American Team and won honors with selection to the New Haven Register's Class L All-State Team. Ms. Kemp participated in post-season play in both the New Haven Shoot-Out and the SchoolBoy Classic. A Meriden resident, Wendi Kemp is employed

Claire Beth Tomasiewiez Nogay High School Player Inductee
By the time Claire Beth had graduated from Weston High School in 1975, her teams had compiled a four-year win/loss record of 69 and 1. In 1974 and 1975, Ms. Tomasiewicz's Weston High teams won the C.I.A.C. Class M. State Championship. She became the first high school girl in the state to score -1,000 points, and set a single game record of 52 points. Her total career points over four years of play at Weston were l,603. In her Junior and Senior years, Ms. Tomasiewicz averaged 30 points a game and finished with a career average over four years of 22.9 points per game. Ms. Tomasiewicz was named to the New Haven Register's AU-State First Teams in 1974 and 1975 and was a member of the First Connecticut Schoolgirl Shoot-Out team in 1975, which defeated Massachusetts. Clair Beth Tomasiewicz Nogay, a resident of West Caldwell, N.J., is employed as a director at New Jersey Bell.
